Cliff graduated in 1980, BA Hons Fine Art, Newcastle University and 1986 Master of Fine Art, Newcastle University under his professor Norman Adams RA. During his MFA course he worked as an Exhibitions Assistant at the Hatton Gallery. He was conference Organiser for New Contemporaries 1986, Newcastle and organised exhibitions on a weekly basis at The Long Gallery, having previously gained experience at Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery as an Exhibitions Assistant.
In late 1986 he moved to Manchester to become Arts Development Officer for MASA and SIGMA Artist Groups – returning to the North East in 1988 to work for Index Magazine (the then official listings magazine for the North of England) as Editor and Designer.
In 1990 he became a freelance graphic designer setting up his company Ikon Creative Design Studio. He currently lives and works in Whitley Bay combining design and his pursuit of landscape painting. Exhibiting with the British Watercolour Society since 1997 he has won a selection of awards including the Brian Mosley Memorial Award in 1999. Following this Cliff was made an Associate of the British Watercolour Society in 2000 and a Full Member in 2004.
In September 2001 one of Cliff’s paintings was selected for the prestigious Singer and Friedlander Sunday Times Watercolour Competition at the Mall Galleries in London – the show toured to venues throughout the country.
