Born in 1951 in North London, Clive moved to Colchester at the age of six. At sixteen, he attended Colchester School of Art, but left after two years without completing the Fine Art degree course;
“I was painting large, meaningless abstract pictures for the tutors without understanding why, or what I was doing, but receiving praise and distinction for doing them – I left the college system in order to learn how to paint.”
As co-founder of the Essex Arts Circus, Clive exhibited widely in small group and one-man shows until moving to York in 1973. In 1974, he became exhibition organiser/Arts representative for York Arts Centre whilst continuing to exhibit in both group and solo shows until 1978.
However, after a successful show at York City Art Gallery (First Four 1978 Exhibition), he stopped painting except on select commissions and almost totally abandoned the brush for camera.
During this time he worked as Director of a commercial video production company, making industrial and promotional films. In 1982, Clive began a commercial Art/design studio specialising in work for smaller businesses and individuals.
With a growing sense of frustration and understanding of the basic desire to create he ‘began painting in 1998’.
Clive’s works are currently in private and corporate collections in England, France, Germany, America, Spain, Canada and Ireland.
