Maria’s jewellery collection uses a very special palm seed called vegetable ivory, which was first discovered over 300 years ago in the Amazon jungle. The colour, hardness and density of these seeds are very similar to animal ivory, making them the only natural and 100% sustainable alternative to ivory, helping to save the elephants and preserving the rain forests, at the same time.

Before vegetable ivory can be worked, the seeds must be allowed to dry naturally to gain the hardness required to be carved. This drying process can take from two to up to twenty years, the older the seed the more valuable it becomes.
