Pierre came to Sculpture in an oblique way, having no formal art training, and having spent much of his early working life in the world of words.
Born in 1952 in Cairo, Egypt of a French mother and a Greek father, Pierre came to England as a refugee during the Suez Crisis. He subsequently graduated from the University of Essex with a BA Honours Degree in Literature.
His professional life began in corporate advertising as a copy writer. In fifteen years he created campaigns for clients such as British Airways, Cadburys, ICI Dulux, Natwest and London Transport; winning international Gold, Silver and Bronze Cinema and Television Awards in New York, Cannes, Venice and London.
Pierre makes original figurative pieces and installations, striving always to defy the earthbound limitations of clay and gravity. In his animalier work he focuses on the physical articulation of creatures, whilst his figures are also allegorical. He often brings the two together in both ceramic original and limited edition bronze.
“For Pierre, the most important element of his work is continual movement; he strives relentlessly onwards, each piece informing the next; it must be thus that they acquire their astonishing articulacy.” (Fran Pickering, Claymaker Magazine)
Pierre is an Associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors.
